A shingle that has lifted, cracked or blown off is a small problem with a short fuse. The underlayment beneath now faces weather it was never meant to face alone, and the next gust has a loose edge to work on.
Shingle problems we repair
We repair every common form of asphalt shingle damage on Calgary homes, from a single torn tab to a patch of storm-battered courses.
Missing or blown-off shingles
A bare strip of underlayment or shingle pieces on the lawn after a windstorm are the obvious signs. Missing shingles usually leave nail holes and torn edges on the course above, so the repair is more than dropping in a new shingle.
Lifted, creased or unsealed shingles after chinook winds
This is the damage people miss: a shingle still on the roof but no longer stuck down. Gusts flex the tab along the nail line until a pale crease forms, and a creased shingle will eventually tear off.
Cracked or split shingles
Cracks come from thermal movement, age, foot traffic or impact. Water tracks through a crack onto the nail below, so a cracked shingle is replaced, not smeared with sealant.
Curling, cupping and clawing
Edges that turn up (cupping) or corners that curl down (clawing) usually point to age, heat from a poorly ventilated attic or shingles that were nailed wrong. A few curled shingles can be swapped. Curling across a slope is a sign of a roof wearing out.
Granule loss and bald spots
Granules shield the asphalt from sunlight. Bald spots expose it, and the shingle dries out and cracks faster. Heavy granules in the eaves or on the driveway are worth noticing.
Hail-bruised shingles
Hail can crush the shingle mat without tearing it, leaving a soft, dark spot where granules are gone. Bruised shingles often look fine from the ground but fail sooner. A few isolated hits can be repaired individually. For damage across the roof after a storm, see storm damage roof repair.
Exposed or popped nails
Nails that back out through freeze-thaw cycles push up the shingle above them and can wear a hole through it. Face-nailed shingles with bare nail heads are another common source of trouble.
Damaged ridge and hip caps
Ridge and hip caps sit on the most exposed line of the roof and take the hardest wind. Caps crack when bent over the peak in cold weather, and their nails are exposed to every gust. Cracked or missing caps leave the ridge open.
Shingles damaged around vents, plumbing boots and chimneys
Shingles cut around penetrations have more edges and more places for water to find, and the flashing is often part of the problem too. If water is already getting in, see roof leak repair.
Why Calgary is hard on shingles
Calgary asks more of asphalt shingles than most Canadian cities, because wind, hail, sun and rapid temperature swings all hit the same roof in the same year.
How a proper shingle repair is done
A proper shingle repair replaces the damaged shingles and restores the overlap and nailing of the courses around them, so the patched area performs like the rest of the roof.
- Find the full extent. Damage rarely stops at the obvious shingle. Neighbouring tabs may be unsealed, creased or nail-damaged too.
- Lift the courses above carefully. They are gently unsealed so their nails can be reached. Cold shingles are stiff and crack easily, so this is slower in winter.
- Remove damaged shingles and nails. Old nails are pulled or cut so they do not puncture the new shingle, and old nail holes in shingles that stay are sealed.
- Check and patch the underlayment. Torn or wet underlayment is repaired, and soft decking is dealt with before the roof is closed.
- Install matching shingles. New shingles go in with the correct exposure and nailing pattern, lapping properly with the courses above and below.
- Hand-seal where needed. Tabs are sealed down with roofing cement when temperatures are too low for the adhesive strip to bond, or when older shingles no longer stick.
- Clean up. Old shingles and loose nails are cleared from the roof and the ground.
Matching old or discontinued shingles
An exact visual match on an older roof is not always possible, and it is better to know that before the work starts. Three things get in the way:
- Weathering. Even the same colour from the same line looks different after years of UV. New shingles tend to look darker and crisper until they age in.
- Discontinued lines. Colours and profiles are retired regularly, so a roof installed a decade or more ago may use a shingle that is no longer made.
- Size changes. Some shingles have changed dimensions over the years, so a new shingle may not line up with old courses without adjustments.
The options are the closest available colour and profile, or borrowing shingles from a hidden back slope for the front and using new ones at the back. Honestly, some repairs on older roofs will be visible from the street.
Can a few shingles be repaired, or does the roof need more?
A few shingles can be repaired when the damage is isolated and the shingles around them are still healthy. The bigger the area and the older the roof, the more the decision shifts toward a larger section or replacement.
| Shingle condition | Spot repair | Larger section | Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| A few shingles blown off on a sound roof | Yes | ||
| Several lifted or creased tabs along one edge or ridge | Yes | ||
| Cracked ridge or hip caps | Yes | ||
| Isolated hail bruises on one slope | Yes | ||
| Wind damage across most of one slope | Yes | ||
| Damaged shingles plus soft decking in one area | Yes | ||
| Curling or cracking across several slopes | Yes | ||
| Widespread granule loss and bald spots | Yes | ||
| Asphalt roof near or past 15–20 years with scattered damage | Yes |
When shingle repair is not worth it
Shingle repair stops making sense when the shingles themselves are worn out, because new damage appears faster than it can be fixed. Watch for:
- Widespread granule loss, with bald patches on most slopes and granules piling up at the eaves.
- Brittle shingles that crack when lifted. If the courses above cannot be unsealed without breaking, every repair creates new damage.
- A roof near the end of its life. At 15–20 years, spending on scattered repairs often just delays an inevitable replacement.
- Multiple layers of shingles. Shingles nailed over an older layer rarely lie flat or seal well, and repairs on them are unreliable.
If the roof is aging but still reasonably flexible, roof restoration can address its accumulated problems in one planned round of work.
Shingle damage and insurance
Insurance may cover shingle damage caused by a sudden event like hail or wind, but usually not wear from age, sun or poor installation. Policies vary, so check yours before assuming either way.
- Photograph the damage early, including shingles on the ground, dented vents and the date of the storm.
- Separate storm damage from wear. Creased tabs right after a windstorm tell a different story than curling that built up over years.
- Roof age matters. Under 15 years, an insurer may pay for a full replacement minus the deductible; at 15–25 years, the payout is typically depreciated by 50–80%; over 25 years, it may be actual cash value only, or denied.
What affects shingle repair cost
Shingle repair cost depends mainly on how many shingles need replacing and what it takes to reach and match them. The main factors are:
- Number of shingles. A few tabs are quick; a section of a slope is much larger.
- Pitch and height. Steep, tall roofs need more safety setup.
- Matching availability. Finding a close match for a discontinued shingle takes effort.
- Underlayment or deck damage. Wet underlayment or soft decking adds work.
- Ridge and hip caps. Caps are handled separately.
- Weather. Hand-sealing, snow clearing and stiff shingles add time.
