After that come the pitch, the number of old layers to tear off, the condition of the deck underneath, the shingle class (Class 4 impact-rated shingles and metal cost more than standard architectural shingles) and how complex and accessible the roof is. Repair makes sense when the damage is limited to one area — a few missing shingles, a cracked plumbing boot, failed flashing around a chimney — and the rest of the roof still has life left.
